Grade R - 'Owl's'“If a child is to keep his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.” -Rachel Carson
The ‘Owl's' facility is situated on the Bentley Prep School grounds. We have a large playground equipped with jungle gyms, swings, and areas for sand play. We have our own special farmyard complete with chickens. There have a fully equipped class, with it's own qualified teacher.
Our days are action packed with concrete learning experiences. All activities are centered around age appropriate themes such as my family, my pets, the seasons, special people, reptiles and amphibians. Fun days of dressing up are a highlight e.g. Heritage Day etc.
Soccer occurs twice a week during the school day as well as swimming, athletics, isiZulu and Hip Hop. Baking and experiments take place regularly and this is all included in the school fees.
Privately paid activities after school are Horse Riding, Computers and Ballet.
At ‘Owl's’ each child’s individuality is appreciated and enhanced in a fun, warm and loving environment.
Grade 1Grade 1 is fun! We have a class that is led by a caring, experienced and motivated teacher. We believe happy children will learn! All our activities are fun and child centered. Although formal work is important, a lot of our activities involve oral work, movement and art. We also do lots of group work. One of our favorite things about Grade 1 is our phonics programme – Letterland! Each week we introduce a different sound that has a corresponding character. Expect to make marvelous mauve marie marshmallows when we learn about ‘m’. Attend Poor Peter Puppy’s pyjama party when we do ‘p’, and of course Clever Cat makes the children a chocolate cake for ‘c’. We let our little ones ease into big school by making all of our lessons interactive and lots of fun!
Grade 2The learners are now well able to read and write, and they thoroughly enjoy using these skills in the various themes that we cover. We work in themes, such as the Ocean and Sea Creatures, or the planets. We visit the Planetarium and gaze up at the stars as exciting stories are told about the stars. The Kid's also have an amazing opportunity to explore the outdoors under the guidance of their expert staff. The children have a fun filled day and learn from looking at the plants and wildlife.
In our classes we read and write and enjoy maths activities and art lessons. We spend an hour at computers every week provided by Little Brains. Every day is filled with physical activities, smiles and laughter. Grade 2 is a busy exciting and eventful year.
Grade 3In Grade 3 we have a very exciting year. The children learn to do cursive writing and by the end of the year they are writing cursive all the time. We concentrate on literacy and do daily reading and language activities. Daily numeracy involves counting, bonds, drill, number concept, calculations as well as problem solving. We also go on an outing to the Aviation Museum to learn about Planes, Captains and Air-hostesses. We also learn about pirates and have an outing dressed up as pirates. The children do computers every week. Every week there is Horse Riding and Soccer to ensure the kids get their physical exercises. The children are encouraged to take part in the extra mural activities like ballet, swimming and mini-tennis. Grade 4Grade 4 is the beginning of the Intermediate Phase and therefore many new learning areas and skills are taught. We concentrate on learning about ourselves and our surroundings. Our topics include our personal timeline, family history and the history of South Africa. An enjoyable outing around Johannesburg helps the learners to identify some of our unique old buildings. Care of the environment is learned during our excursions. There is a great excitement in Grade 4 when a learner earns their first merit badge, which is handed out at assembly. The Grade 4 learners are happy, enthusiastic group of learners who enjoy every aspect of a wonderful school.
